In a major green initiative, the Delhi government is preparing to establish 17 new forests across nearly 195 acres of land in the capital. According to the plan finalized last month, 15 of these will be "Namo Van" city forests, while the remaining 2 will be dense Miyawaki forests in southwest Delhi.
The plantation work for these new forests is expected to begin as early as next month, with simultaneous tenders already floated for all 17 sites. Environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that these forests will largely be created on barren land, transforming unused stretches into lush green pockets.
The new forests are not only aimed at providing citizens with more recreational green spaces, but they will also play a crucial role in regulating the city's temperature and aiding the fight against air pollution. The Miyawaki forests, in particular, are known for their high carbon sequestration rates and ability to mature rapidly, within just a few years.
The sites for these new forests have been identified across north, northwest, and southwest Delhi, with the majority concentrated in the Rohini and Narela areas. The two Miyawaki forests will be established in Kharkhari Jatmal and Jainpur, near Najafgarh.
