Delhi Dhobi Ghats Face Sealings Over Pollution
20 Oct
Summary
- Three unauthorized dhobi ghats were sealed in Old Delhi.
- MCD is cracking down on establishments violating environmental norms.
- Water and electricity connections of violators are threatened.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified its efforts to combat Yamuna River pollution by sealing three unauthorized dhobi ghats in the Old Delhi Zone. This decisive action follows inspections revealing significant environmental non-compliance, including inadequate wastewater treatment and a lack of mandatory environmental clearances.
Further enforcement measures are anticipated, with the MCD indicating that more establishments may face closure in the coming days. The corporation is coordinating with police and local administration to ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations. Violators also risk disconnection of their water and electricity services, as relevant utility providers have been notified.
The crackdown was prompted by a review chaired by MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, who mandated the immediate shutdown of unauthorized facilities and adherence to DPCC standards by authorized ones. Operators are urged to cease discharging untreated wastewater, use compliant detergents, and report any non-compliant facilities.
