Delhi C&D Waste: Cops Get Cams to Catch Dumpers
20 Feb
Summary
- CCTV cameras will be installed at vulnerable sites to penalise violators.
- Delhi generates over 6,000 tonnes of C&D waste daily.
- A new processing facility is expected to be operational by December 2026.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is implementing stricter measures to combat the illegal dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Following numerous complaints about debris being discarded along major roads and intersections, the MCD has requested the Public Works Department (PWD) to install CCTV cameras. These cameras will target vulnerable, non-designated sites to identify and penalise violators.
To aid in waste management, the MCD has launched a digital map featuring 125 designated C&D waste collection points across Delhi, accessible on the MCD website. However, a recent report indicated that nearly half of these authorised sites lack adequate dust control infrastructure, contributing to air pollution.
Daily C&D waste generation in Delhi is estimated at over 6,000 tonnes, with current processing capacity at 5,000 tonnes per day. A new 1,000 tonnes per day processing facility at the Okhla reclaimed site is scheduled to become operational by December 2026. The MCD also plans to increase the number of collection points, aiming for at least one per ward.
Violators, particularly contractors involved in small-scale projects, are expected to deposit debris at designated centres. Bulk waste generators must transport debris to authorised processing plants. The MCD's initiative to install CCTVs aims to create a deterrent effect and enforce existing rules more effectively.
