The Delhi Jal Board has undertaken a significant project to improve the Yamuna River's health by upgrading 10 sewage treatment plants. These upgrades aim to drastically reduce the amount of waste entering the river.
This initiative has expanded Delhi's sewage treatment capacity to 814 MGD, a notable increase from its previous capacity. The board currently manages 37 sewage treatment plants across the city, ensuring more robust wastewater management.
Further measures to combat water pollution include the installation of new sewer lines and the tapping of smaller drains. Experts from IIT Roorkee are also involved in a feasibility study to minimize water losses in Delhi-bound canals.
Decentralized STPs are being established to treat untreated sewage before it reaches the river, which will benefit nearly 30 lakh citizens, including those in unauthorized colonies and villages.
In addition to environmental efforts, the DJB launched a surcharge waiver scheme for domestic customers, benefiting over 3.5 lakh households and collecting ₹484.48 crore in revenue.
