Delhi's Animals Suffer Extreme Heatwave Woes
23 May
Summary
- Bird and animal distress calls have surged due to extreme heat.
- Pigeon pox and other infections are rising in the heat.
- Over 45 degrees Celsius temperatures cause heat strokes and dehydration.

The Delhi-NCR region is experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius, leading to a significant rise in distress calls for birds and stray animals. Veterinarians report a nearly 50% increase in heat-related illnesses, including dehydration and heat strokes. Pigeons are particularly affected by infections like pigeon pox, which spread more rapidly in extreme heat and poor conditions.
Rescuers are seeing up to 70-80 cases daily, with many birds arriving in critical or unconscious states. Treatment involves providing ORS and fluids, but survival chances depend on early intervention. Stray dogs and cats are also suffering from gastrointestinal infections due to faster garbage decomposition. Animal welfare groups are distributing water pots and urging residents to provide shaded resting spots and water for animals.
Efforts are underway to mitigate the impact, including distributing 10,000 water pots and conducting outreach campaigns. While many resident birds are adapted to heat, urbanisation and reduced green cover limit access to water. Experts advise placing clean water bowls in shaded areas, refilling them twice daily, to help birds survive the harsh summer. Peacocks, kites, eagles, street dogs, and cats are among the species most affected.
