Delhi Chokes: Air Quality Plummets to Poor Levels
4 Jan
Summary
- Delhi's air quality is in the 'poor' category with AQI at 298.
- Several monitoring stations show 'very poor' air quality, impacting health.
- Flight operations are affected due to poor visibility and fog.

As of Sunday morning, Delhi's air quality registered an AQI of 298, falling into the 'poor' category. Residents experienced breathing difficulties due to the deteriorating air, compounded by a chilly and windy start to the day. Several areas, including Anand Vihar and Rohini, saw AQI levels rise to the 'very poor' range, indicating widespread pollution.
Flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport were significantly impacted, with numerous flights delayed and cancelled due to shallow fog and poor visibility. The India Meteorological Department forecasts minimum temperatures around 9 degrees Celsius, potentially dipping to 7-8 degrees Celsius, with light winds expected. The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology's Early Warning System predicts further deterioration to 'very poor' air quality over the next six days.
Authorities have urged citizens to adhere to Stage I and II guidelines of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to curb pollution. Although Stage-III restrictions were revoked following inspections showing compliance at construction and industrial sites in Nuh, Haryana, closure orders for violators remain in effect. Compliance with GRAP norms is crucial to prevent further air quality decline.
