Delhi Chokes: Air Quality in 'Very Poor' for 4th Day
5 Nov
Summary
- Delhi's air quality has been 'very poor' for four consecutive days.
- Numerous reporting stations recorded AQI readings in severe or very poor categories.
- Farm fires detected in Punjab and Haryana may be contributing to the pollution.
For the fourth day running, Delhi experienced air quality in the 'very poor' category, with a thick haze blanketing the city. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 368 on Thursday morning. On Wednesday, the 24-hour average AQI was recorded at 377, following 350 on Tuesday and 324 on Monday.
Out of 59 reporting stations, 18 registered AQI readings in the 'severe' category, while 36 were in the 'very poor' category. Jahangirpuri reported the highest AQI at 459. The primary pollutant identified across most stations was PM2.5.
Satellite observations detected 2,251 farm fires in Punjab and Haryana from October 1 to November 4. While this count is slightly lower than the previous year's corresponding period, stubble burning is increasingly occurring later in the day, potentially making current counts underestimates.
