Delhi Air Quality Alert: Stage 1 Measures Activated
17 Apr
Summary
- Preventive air quality measures invoked across the NCR region.
- Increased water sprinkling and public transport frequency are key actions.
- Maximum temperatures are predicted to exceed 40°C this week.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the NCR has implemented Stage 1 (poor) air quality measures with immediate effect. These actions are primarily preventive, focusing on measures like increased water sprinkling on roads and more frequent public transport. Enhanced vigilance on waste dumping and industrial emissions is also mandated.
The Sub-Committee invoked the 31-point action plan to prevent further deterioration of air quality in the entire NCR. All previous restrictions had been lifted on March 16th after the air quality improved to a 'moderate' category, largely remaining in this range until now.
Compounding these air quality concerns, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a further rise in maximum temperatures, possibly reaching 42°C by Friday and continuing through the weekend. While a western disturbance is expected to impact the western Himalayas, rain is unlikely in Delhi, with the day remaining hot and temperatures above 40°C.
