Delhi Chokes: Construction Dust Unchecked

Delhi's air quality has alarmingly deteriorated, slipping back into the 'severe' category as dust from ongoing construction and road excavation continues to plague numerous neighborhoods. Visible pollution has been reported in central and south Delhi areas. Despite discussions at a government meeting earlier this month highlighting dust as a major locally generated pollution source, concrete actions from Delhi authorities are pending, as they have not responded to queries regarding dust control measures.

Specific sites, such as a nearly 200-meter stretch on Dr. Rajendra Prasad Road near India Gate, showcase extensive dust pollution due to ongoing footpath construction, with loose soil creating airborne hazards. Similar issues persist in Palam Colony, where open pits for pipeline laying have resulted in continuous dust exposure for residents, impacting daily life and causing health concerns, particularly for children attending local anganwadis who have reported chest pains and body aches.

Residents across several localities, including Palam Colony, Palam Extension, and Dwarka sectors, have voiced distress over the persistent dust problem, attributing it to repeated digging for various utility projects over the past two years. The lack of effective dust management, as mandated by the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules, 2016, exacerbates the situation, leaving citizens exposed to hazardous air quality.
