Delhi Targets 100% Waste Segregation by 2027
18 Feb
Summary
- MCD aims for 100% waste segregation by January 2027.
- Over 985 out of 1,494 Delhi dhalaos have been shut.
- Experts question MCD's current 60% segregation claims.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has submitted a plan to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) targeting 100% waste segregation at source by January 2027. Currently, the civic body reports achieving 60% segregation, with ambitious intermediate goals set for February and August of the current year.
As part of this initiative, the MCD has phased out 985 of the city's 1,494 dhalaos, which served as secondary collection points. This move towards eliminating dhalaos is contingent on successfully meeting the waste segregation targets, as stated in their February 16 submission.
However, waste management experts have voiced doubts regarding the reported 60% segregation figure. They point to a lack of supervision, incentives, and accountability as significant challenges. Questions have been raised about the feasibility of achieving complete segregation within the next ten months, emphasizing the need for staff training and widespread household awareness.
