A new enclosure for a Himalayan black bear has been inaugurated at the Dehradun zoo. The two-year-old bear was recently rescued from the Kanasar forests in Chakrata and is now accessible for public viewing. This addition aims to enhance the zoo's role in wildlife awareness and tourism.
Forest minister Subodh Uniyal inaugurated the enclosure, highlighting the success of previous exhibits. The tiger enclosure, opened last year, reportedly drew 1.5 lakh visitors and generated around Rs 1.5 crore in revenue. Officials anticipate the black bear will further contribute to these figures.
The rescued bear underwent a thorough quarantine period. During this time, zoo veterinarians and keepers closely monitored its health, feeding habits, and overall behavior to ensure a smooth transition into its new public habitat.
