Debrigarh Readies for Tiger Return
6 Jan
Summary
- Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary will introduce tigers via translocation program.
- 120 km iron mesh fencing will separate sanctuary from 150 villages.
- Debrigarh is set to become western Odisha's first tiger reserve.

Wildlife authorities are making final preparations to introduce tigers into Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary, marking the second phase of a translocation program. Essential steps include tiger selection, community engagement, and the installation of 120 km of iron mesh fencing to create a barrier with nearby villages. Watchtowers are being established to monitor tiger movements upon their release into the sanctuary.
The National Tiger Conservation Authority has approved the introduction of tigers, and the state is now identifying a suitable source habitat for selecting a male and female pair. Local representatives and villagers are being informed about the importance of this initiative to ensure a smooth post-release process. The steel mesh boundary is crucial for maintaining a safe distance between the sanctuary and 150 surrounding villages.
Debrigarh is poised to become western Odisha's inaugural tiger reserve, covering 804 sq km with a 353 sq km core area. This designation follows a mandatory gram sabha exercise in adjoining villages and an expert committee's report. The National Tiger Conservation Authority's recommendation for prey supplementation stems from Debrigarh's favorable conditions for sustaining big cats.
