Debrigarh wildlife Sanctuary has experienced a remarkable surge in ecotourism during the 2025-26 fiscal year, generating Rs 6.02 crore in revenue. This represents a significant increase from the Rs 5.01 crore earned in the prior financial year. The sanctuary welcomed over 1.4 lakh tourists, a substantial jump from the 85,000 visitors recorded previously, solidifying its status as a rapidly growing wildlife destination in Odisha.
The sanctuary's appeal has been enhanced by innovative attractions such as Odisha's first forest homestays and a dedicated 2-km birding trail. These new offerings have attracted a diverse range of visitors, including those from international locations like Italy, France, and the US, contributing to its global recognition. Approximately half of all visitors hailed from within Odisha, with the remainder coming from other Indian states and abroad.
Further boosting visitor engagement, Debrigarh introduced star-gazing rooms with glass roofs, an Island Café, guided star-gazing activities, and a wildlife library in the preceding year. This year's focus on immersive nature-based experiences through homestays and birdwatching continues this trend. The sanctuary guarantees sightings of diverse wildlife, including Indian bison, leopards, and various bird species, alongside traditional attractions like Hirakud cruises and island trips.
The development of ecotourism has also empowered local communities, with around 120 families engaged as nature guides, safari drivers, and homestay hosts. Notably, 40% of these community members are women, with tribal women solely managing homestays and becoming the primary breadwinners. Future expansion plans include adding 32 new night-stay cottages, 10 more homestays, a canopy walk, and enhanced safari and cruise facilities by the end of summer.
