Data Centers Drain Trillions of Gallons Annually

A think tank's report indicates that data centers across seven US states withdraw 10.4 million acre-feet of freshwater yearly, equivalent to 3.4 trillion gallons. This figure is notably higher than California's annual urban water usage. The report acknowledges that this measurement includes water withdrawals, not just consumption, meaning some water is returned to its source shortly after use.

This extensive water usage for power generation raises concerns, especially as 66% of the associated power plants are situated in water-stressed regions. Projections suggest water for power generation could constitute 72% of total US data center water consumption by 2030. Local opposition to data center projects, citing water and grid concerns, has already disrupted significant investments.
