Data Centers Spark National Outrage

Data centers, the backbone of the internet and AI, are increasingly becoming a flashpoint in communities across the United States. As these facilities expand, so does opposition, with a recent survey indicating that 70% of Americans are against building them in their areas. Critics highlight concerns over substantial water and electricity consumption, noise pollution, and electronic waste.

Environmentalists and activists argue that data centers pose significant environmental challenges. In 2023 alone, U.S. data centers consumed 176 terawatt-hours of electricity, enough to power 16 million homes. Water usage is also a major issue, with large facilities potentially consuming up to 5 million gallons daily, comparable to a town of 50,000 people. Furthermore, the disposal of outdated hardware contributes to toxic electronic waste.

Industry advocates counter that data centers are vital for technological innovation and provide high-paying jobs, contributing to local tax revenues. They argue that the infrastructure is essential for the AI era. Despite these benefits, the debate has garnered public attention, with some celebrities even making light of the water consumption issue.

In response to community concerns, some states and local governments are implementing new regulations and oversight measures for data centers. As of August 19, 2026, there were over 4,700 data centers in the U.S., with Virginia leading as the "data center capital of the world" and Texas following closely.
