Heatwave Drains UK Dairy Farms: Winter Feed Depleted
1 Sep
Summary
- Hot, dry summer weather depleted dairy farmers' winter feed reserves.
- Industry may need to increase milk prices to address climate challenges.
- Government offers £65 million drought package for farmer resilience.

A dairy farmer in Shropshire has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced support to make the agricultural sector more resilient to climate change. Tim Downes, a third-generation farmer, explained that the exceptionally hot and dry weather experienced this past summer has led to a significant depletion of winter feed stocks for dairy herds.
To mitigate these impacts and ensure future stability, Downes suggested that an increase in milk prices might become necessary. In response to the difficulties faced by the farming community, the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced additional support measures. A new £65 million drought package has been introduced, with £50 million specifically allocated to Sustainable Farming Incentive agreements designed to foster both short-term and long-term resilience against extreme weather conditions.
