Cyprus Tops EU Beach Water Quality Rankings

European bathing waters are predominantly of excellent quality, according to a recent study analyzing European Environment Agency (EEA) reports. The findings indicate that roughly 85% of the EU's 22,000 bathing water sites achieved an excellent classification, with a mere 1.5% deemed poor. Cyprus emerged at the forefront, boasting 100% of its swim sites rated excellent, making it the cleanest destination for swimmers. Greece followed with an impressive 97.1% of its waters classified as excellent. Visitors can enjoy popular spots like Coral Bay in Paphos, known for its accessibility and calm, shallow waters. Risks from contaminants like E. coli and intestinal enterococci are present, especially after heavy rainfall due to agricultural runoff or sewage overflows, potentially leading to infections. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children, are advised to be particularly cautious. At the lower end of the spectrum, Albania reported only 16.8% of its waters as excellent, with 23% classified as poor and showing significant levels of fecal bacteria. These figures highlight varying water quality standards across European destinations.
