A spearfisher's catch of a large cuttlefish at Coogee Beach on Thursday morning has renewed calls for expanded marine conservation efforts. The impressive invertebrate, which can grow significantly in size, was brought ashore near the Ross Jones Rockpool, much to the surprise of beachgoers.
The incident took place in an area immediately adjacent to a 40-hectare aquatic reserve. This established zone, intended to protect marine biodiversity across several eastern beaches, ends at the rock baths, legally permitting spearfishing activities where the cuttlefish was caught.
Locals and marine scientists contend that the current conservation area's boundaries form a 'blind spot,' inadvertently posing risks to marine life along Sydney's coastline. They are advocating for an increase in the reserve's size to provide more comprehensive protection for the cherished local sea creatures.
