Between November 2025 and March 2026, volunteers in Cumbria planted 17,860 new trees, adding over 2km of new hedgerows to the landscape. Additionally, 3km of existing hedgerows across the region were restored.
These efforts are part of the Hedges and Edges project, which aims to create vital habitats, enhance biodiversity, and restore natural flood management capabilities. The project saw participation from local farmers and community spaces, including Kirkby Lonsdale Football Club and St. Peter's Church in Askham.
The charity Friends of the Lake District is committed to continuing this work, planning to plant and restore another 6km of hedgerows in the upcoming winter. These initiatives emphasize the value of rural skills and the long-term benefits of managed hedgerows for the environment.
