Summary
- Global crested ibis population now exceeds 12,000 birds.
- Habitat for the species has expanded significantly to over 20,000 sq km.
- Center has successfully bred approximately 1,000 crested ibis chicks.

The crested ibis, once facing extinction, has achieved a significant conservation success. By late 2025, the global population soared past 12,000 individuals. This remarkable recovery is evidenced by its habitat expansion to over 20,000 square kilometers.
Conservation initiatives, such as those at the Crested Ibis Captive Breeding and Conservation Center in Shaanxi province, have played a vital role. This center replicates natural wetland and woodland habitats, aiding natural reproduction. They provide the birds with essential survival training in foraging, nesting, and flying.
These dedicated efforts have resulted in the successful breeding of approximately 1,000 crested ibis chicks. The species' range is steadily being restored, with its presence now confirmed across 15 provincial-level regions in China.
