27 May
Summary
- Expedition explores Sotka river, the only canyon-type river in Arkhangelsk.
- Cosmonaut Ivan Vagner participates in the non-motorized watercraft journey.
- Scientists will study water, soil, and vegetation in the protected area.

The "North - Territory of Discoveries" expedition has begun its journey along the Sotka River, a unique canyon-type waterway within the Pinezhsky Nature Reserve in the Arkhangelsk Region. The expedition, which started recently, includes 30 participants, notably cosmonaut Ivan Vagner, alongside specialists from various research institutions.
Using non-motorized kayaks, the team will traverse the 40 km stretch of the river that runs through the reserve. Their primary objective is to study the river's ecological conditions, including water quality, soil, and vegetation, and to assess any potential pollutants. Hydrologists will particularly focus on the river's distinct seasonal water regime.
The expedition will also delve into karst caves along the river, with speleologists and geoecologists conducting research. This scientific endeavor aims to establish systematic monitoring sites for future, more in-depth research. The Pinezhsky State Nature Reserve itself is significant, established in 1974 to preserve the North taiga and unique karst landscapes, boasting approximately 90 caves.
