A beloved hiking destination in the Columbia River Gorge, the Lyle Hill Cherry Orchard Trail, will stay closed indefinitely due to damage from the Lyle Hill Fire. This fire, which spanned 226 acres, occurred last month in June and significantly impacted the preserve located east of Lyle, Washington.
Officials from Friends of the Columbia Gorge have begun assessing the damage. They observed that sections of the trail require repairs and that oak woodlands need evaluation for hazardous trees. Significant work will involve managing burnt trees that could endanger future visitors.
The recovery process for the preserve is expected to take several months. While community work projects are anticipated, a precise timeline has not yet been established. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to subscribe to the Friends of the Columbia Gorge newsletter.
