Colorado Lawn Watering Urged to Wait Despite Warm March
18 Mar
Summary
- Denver Water urges homeowners to avoid turning on irrigation systems in March.
- Reservoirs are collectively at 80% capacity, below the typical 85% average.
- Drought restrictions, including limited watering days, are being considered.

As Colorado anticipates a significant warm spell, Denver Water is urging residents to hold off on activating their lawn irrigation systems. Spokesperson Todd Hartman stressed that turning on sprinklers in March is premature, especially with weekend snow providing some moisture. He cautioned that early activation could damage systems if a late freeze occurs and, more critically, deplete water resources needed if the drought persists.
Reservoirs are currently at 80% capacity, below the usual 85% for this time of year. This situation has prompted the Board of Water Commissioners to consider implementing Stage 1 drought restrictions. If enacted, these restrictions would likely limit watering to two assigned days per week, a significant change from the typical three-day schedule during the May to October season. The board is set to discuss these potential measures on March 25.
