Woman Endures Terrifying 30-Minute Encounter with Persistent Bear
29 Jun
Summary
- A black bear followed a woman for 30 minutes on a Colorado hiking trail.
- The bear did not retreat despite hazing attempts and assistance from others.
- Officials suspect the unusual behavior is due to food conditioning, not predation.

A woman on a Colorado hiking trail endured a startling 30-minute ordeal with a persistent black bear. The encounter began on the Enchanted Forest trail in Apex Park near Golden on Sunday around 5:20 p.m. According to the hiker, the bear approached from behind, and despite her efforts to deter it by yelling and throwing rocks, it refused to leave.
Adding to the unusual nature of the incident, the bear continued to follow the woman even after two other hikers arrived to help. Together, the three individuals shouted at the animal until it eventually retreated. However, the bear was then reportedly seen following other hikers. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officials noted the behavior was highly atypical and suggested it might stem from the bear becoming accustomed to human food sources.
CPW is actively searching for the bear to assess its condition and decide on further action. Officials are considering whether the bear is malnourished or sick, or if this is part of a pattern of concerning behavior. The incident underscores the critical importance of proper food and trash management in bear habitats to prevent such conflicts and ensure the safety of both people and wildlife.
Experts emphasize that while bear attacks are rare, persistent or aggressive behavior warrants careful investigation. If the bear is deemed a continued risk due to food conditioning or aggression, euthanasia may be considered. CPW urges the public to take precautions when recreating in bear country, including carrying bear spray and being aware of safety guidelines.
