In Coimbatore, the compound walls of the Central Academy for State Forest Service (CASFOS) have been transformed into a sprawling outdoor gallery. The project, which began in 2024, features 217 paintings of India's flora and fauna on one wall and an additional 285 on another. Funded by the Government of India, this initiative was spearheaded by V Thirunavukarasu, Principal of CASFOS, with the aim of beautifying the campus and educating the public.
The artwork, executed by artists from Madhu Arts, displays a remarkable level of detail and scientific accuracy. Each species, from the purple sunbird to the Indian gaur, is rendered lifelike and accompanied by its botanical, common, and Tamil names. The walls also depict a range of reptiles, insects, and moths, offering a comprehensive overview of the region's biodiversity. The project has received positive public feedback, with citizens showing respect for the artwork.
Future phases of the project will extend the artistic transformation to other boundary walls within the campus. Additionally, a colonial-era building on campus is slated to become a centre of excellence for human-animal conflict research. This initiative aligns with the principle of preserving public property as a valuable asset to the city.
