Coimbatore is actively participating in Wildlife Week with extensive clean-up drives and awareness campaigns. As part of the week-long celebration, which runs from October 2 to 8, 2026, volunteers from various organizations worked alongside the Forest Department.
On Sunday, October 4, 2026, a substantial amount of waste, totaling around 300 kg, was collected from Perumalmudi and Melmudi. This waste, primarily discarded by pilgrims and trekkers, included plastics and footwear removed from trekking trails.
Further efforts are planned, including a clean-up drive on Anaikatti Road on Monday and at Kovai Courtallam on Tuesday. At Kovai Courtallam, awareness activities focused on educating visitors about the risks associated with feeding or disturbing wildlife, littering, and the importance of driving cautiously.
In a unique initiative, the Forest Department has partnered with the Airports Authority of India. Digital boards at the Coimbatore airport will now feature photographs and descriptions of Tamil Nadu's State animal, bird, and butterfly to educate passengers about local biodiversity.
