Coimbatore blooms: Nectar garden supports pollinators
6 Jul
Summary
- Nectar garden with native plants is being developed in Coimbatore.
- Over 1,200 nectar plants of 15 to 18 native species will be planted.
- The initiative aims to support pollinators like bees and butterflies.

A pioneering nectar garden is emerging in Coimbatore, focused on cultivating native plant species to aid pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and moths. This significant initiative is underway on a plot exceeding 3,000 square feet within the District Forest Officer's office premises.
The project is a collaborative endeavor between the Coimbatore Forest Division, the Centre for Urban Biodiversity and Education (CUBE), and the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Cotton City. The garden is set to host around 1,200 nectar plants, representing 15 to 18 distinct native species.
Forest Department officials inaugurated the project by planting saplings of native nectar plants. This effort aims to bolster the local environment by creating vital habitats for pollinators and increasing the city's green cover, with plans to establish similar gardens at numerous locations.
The organization behind the research, CUBE, will actively monitor the garden's impact on various pollinators. They aspire to include at least 100 native plant species in future garden developments, contributing to a healthier ecosystem.
Individuals and organizations interested in establishing similar nectar gardens in Coimbatore are encouraged to contact CUBE for guidance and support.
