Coimbatore Meat Waste Crisis: Vendors Dump Garbage in Streets

Coimbatore's meat vendors are grappling with a severe waste disposal crisis, with collection services halted for the past three days. The suspension of meat waste dumping at the Vellalore dump yard, initiated by city corporation commissioner directives, has left stall owners with no safe means to dispose of daily generated waste. Vendors report that despite paying regular garbage collection charges and taxes, their basic civic service has been withdrawn without prior notice.

Owners fear the accumulation of meat waste will soon lead to unbearable odor, toxic gas formation, and significant sanitation issues. Some vendors have been compelled to transport waste outside corporation limits to avoid fines for improper disposal. Councillor Chithra Vellingiri warned that continued disruption could result in waste being dumped in streets and water bodies, posing a major public health threat and attracting stray animals.
