A comprehensive four-year study analyzing health data from 2019 to 2022 in Pakistan's coastal districts of Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin has revealed a significant rise in infectious diseases, with over 982,000 cases documented. Under-five diarrhoea and suspected malaria were identified as the most prevalent illnesses affecting the population.
The research strongly indicates that higher temperatures, increased humidity, and greater precipitation directly correlate with a higher incidence of these diseases. Notably, Thatta district experienced nearly 30,000 malaria cases in September 2022 alone, following severe monsoon flooding, with malaria cases peaking weeks after rainfall.
Diarrhoea cases showed peaks during the monsoon season and in March, while dysentery and typhoid remained relatively stable. The study highlights that malaria cases in Pakistan have surged fivefold between 2021 and 2022.
Experts advocate for integrating real-time weather forecasting with health surveillance systems. This approach could empower low-resource settings to better anticipate outbreaks, strategically allocate medical supplies, and protect vulnerable communities before climate-related disasters strike.
