Clearwater Banned from Parade for Banners
5 Jul
Summary
- Clearwater was removed from a July 4th tall ships parade due to its banners.
- Banners promoting environmental and social justice caused the disqualification.
- Officials disputed whether they were offered a chance to remove the banners.

On July 4th, 2026, the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater was removed from a tall ships procession in New York City. The ship was escorted out by the U.S. Coast Guard due to two banners displayed on its sails. These banners carried messages such as "Save the Clean Water Act" and "Indigenous Rights Racial Justice Climate Solutions."
The Coast Guard stated that the banners violated parade rules prohibiting "political or politically charged messages." Clearwater representatives, however, contested this, claiming they were not given an opportunity to remove the banners and were instead told to leave the event. They reached out to event organizers who indicated the decision was beyond their control.
Clearwater, founded in 1966 by activists including folk singer Pete Seeger, has a long history of environmental advocacy for the Hudson River. The ship previously participated in the 1976 bicentennial tall ships parade. Despite this recent exclusion, Clearwater maintains that advocating for clean water and climate action is not inherently political, citing recent heat-related issues impacting water quality in the region as an example.
