3 Mar
Summary
- Over 80 percent of key State-protected terrestrial wildlife species now protected.
- China has established five national parks covering nearly 30 percent of key species.
- Over 28,000 wild plant species are collected and preserved in resource banks.

China has achieved significant advancements in wildlife conservation, with improved habitats and stable population growth for numerous endangered species. As of Tuesday, which marked UN World Wildlife Day, over 80 percent of key State-protected terrestrial wildlife species are now under protection. This initiative now encompasses 988 animal and approximately 1,200 plant species, with an additional 1,924 terrestrial wild animal species of significant ecological value being protected.
The nation's in-situ conservation system, centered on national parks, is proving effective. The first five national parks, established in 2021, now protect nearly 30 percent of key terrestrial wildlife species under State protection. This is complemented by the designation of 789 important habitats for terrestrial wildlife, 1,140 bird migration corridors, and over 500 conservation sites for rare and endangered wild plants.
Conservation efforts extend to wild plants, with the establishment of two national botanical gardens and three key laboratories. A network of seven national forest and grass germplasm resource banks now preserves over 28,000 wild plant species, with more than 300 species successfully reintroduced into the wild.
