China's Mangroves Thrive: Coverage Soars!
27 Jul
Summary
- China restored 22,500 hectares of mangroves since 2020.
- Mangrove area increased by 44% since early 2000s.
- New plans aim to expand mangrove conservation until 2030.

Since 2020, China has planted and restored around 22,500 hectares of mangroves, exceeding its restoration targets. This initiative has led to a notable increase in mangrove coverage, which has grown by approximately 44 percent since the early 2000s, reaching 31,700 hectares.
The country's commitment to these vital coastal ecosystems is underscored by robust protection measures. Over 90 percent of China's mangroves are now designated under an ecological protection red line, safeguarding them from development.
Enhancements to the legal framework, including the 2022 Wetland Protection Law and revised nature reserve regulations, further standardize and strengthen management practices for mangrove conservation and restoration.
Coastal regions are actively exploring economic benefits from mangroves. Initiatives like carbon credit schemes, integrating conservation with aquaculture, and developing ecotourism are creating value while preserving these important habitats.
A new mangrove conservation action plan for 2026-2030 is currently being drafted, which will outline future restoration efforts, ecological security boundaries, and management responsibilities.
