China's procuratorial bodies have intensified public interest litigation to champion green and low-carbon development, as detailed in a recent white paper. A nationwide supervisory campaign, launched in March 2025, focused on environmental violations across various sectors.
By February 2026, prosecutors addressed about 44,000 cases, including over 13,000 concerning pollution control and carbon emissions. These efforts resulted in the rectification of more than 4,000 enterprises for illegal pollutant discharge and the rehabilitation of vast ecological areas.
Prosecutors also successfully recovered 1.05 billion yuan for ecological restoration, significantly improving environmental quality. The Supreme People's Procuratorate has issued new guidelines to enhance the legal framework for environmental litigation.
Internationally, China is actively sharing its successful practices, including watershed governance and marine protection, receiving growing global recognition and fostering cooperation with nations like Vietnam and Egypt.
