Summary
- Over 386 million trees planted through Ant Forest initiative.
- Initiative funds tree planting using rewards for low-carbon actions.
- 386 million trees have been planted in seven provincial regions.

China's private sector has achieved a significant milestone in afforestation through its internet-based Ant Forest initiative, successfully integrating gamified digital incentives into national ecological strategies. Since 2017, in collaboration with the China Green Foundation, Ant Forest has facilitated the planting of 386 million trees across approximately 440 projects in seven provincial-level regions, including Gansu, Qinghai, and Inner Mongolia.
This program has transformed the 'green energy' of hundreds of millions of internet users into tangible ecological results. The Ant Forest app, launched by Ant Financial, awards users virtual energy for engaging in low-carbon activities such as walking or using public transport, which can then be redeemed to plant real trees. A robust mechanism for public participation, including a nationwide online platform for tracking tree growth, ensures lasting ecological impact.
The initiative, which boasts over 500 million users, has funded the planting of more than 619 million drought-resistant trees and shrubs. A 28-year-old user, Li Meng, exemplifies the program's power, having personally contributed to planting 1,120 trees since 2016, driven by a sense of shared environmental responsibility for western China.
