Summary
- China's environmental monitoring network uses 150 satellites.
- A new satellite offers high-precision greenhouse gas detection.
- The system monitors nature reserves, coastlines, and global emissions.

China has established a sophisticated modern monitoring network for ecological and environmental protection, integrating space, air, ground, and sea systems and supported by around 150 satellites. This network represents a significant advancement in China's environmental oversight capabilities.
A key component is a newly launched satellite capable of high-precision greenhouse gas detection. This satellite uniquely combines active and passive detection methods, allowing for large-scale, accurate monitoring of major greenhouse gases and gaseous pollutants across the globe. It can identify methane leaks from oil and gas fields, coal mines, and landfills.
The system conducts regular 'health checks' on protected areas and coastlines, scanning millions of square kilometers of nature reserves and thousands of kilometers of coastline and coastal waters. It also uses hyperspectral sensors for precise targeting, aiding air pollution control efforts by identifying atmospheric components and measuring trace gases. Plans are in place to launch five more environmental satellites between 2026 and 2030.
