China's Rural Heating Crisis: Gas Prices Cut Amidst Cold

Major energy suppliers in northern Chinese cities have reduced natural gas prices by 0.2 yuan per cubic meter for the winter heating season. In Baoding, Langfang, Handan, and Zhangjiakou, ENN Energy and other providers have lowered terminal sales prices to 2.98 yuan per cu m for rural households switching from coal. This initiative aims to make heating more affordable for residents.

The government's "coal-to-gas" program, initiated in 2017, significantly improved air quality in northern China. However, many rural residents report that the cleaner alternative has become a substantial financial burden. Households in Shanxi and Henan provinces have noted rising gas prices, with some facing costs of up to 10,000 yuan for winter heating.

Experts cite factors like low population density, scattered housing, and reduced subsidies for increased rural heating costs. County-level gas companies also struggle with bargaining power for wholesale prices. While natural gas is generally a reasonable clean heating source, experts suggest exploring diversified energy mixes.

In Sanggang village, Hebei, where gas heating is unavailable, about 60 percent of villagers have adopted air-source heat pumps. One couple reported electricity bills totaling approximately 2,300 yuan for the winter, significantly less than their previous coal expenses. This demonstrates a more cost-effective and comfortable heating alternative for rural Chinese households.
