Elusive Snow Leopards Captured on Camera in China
14 Jul
Summary
- Camera traps documented 157 snow leopard sightings in China's alpine regions.
- WWF-China supported 500 person-days of snow leopard ranger patrols.
- Snow leopards are vital indicators of healthy mountain ecosystems.

A network of remote camera traps in western China has provided some of the clearest images yet of snow leopards, with one striking photo capturing two of the elusive cats. These camera traps, deployed across China's alpine regions, recorded 157 snow leopard sightings in areas like Qilian Mountain National Park and Sichuan's Wolong National Nature Reserve. The infrared cameras are designed to withstand extreme cold, operating in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Conservation teams are leveraging this data to better understand snow leopard populations, which are notoriously difficult to study due to their remote habitat. The presence of snow leopards, as apex predators, is a key indicator of the health of mountain ecosystems. These healthy alpine landscapes are vital for biodiversity and support essential watersheds that downstream communities rely on. WWF-China has been actively supporting ranger patrols, contributing 500 person-days of effort throughout 2025 to aid these conservation efforts.
