China's Bird Survey Faces Volunteer Shortage
2 Apr
Summary
- Volunteers struggle with remote areas and identification.
- Logistical challenges include weather and broken roads.
- Encouraging volunteer participation remains a key goal.

The China Breeding Bird Survey (CBBS) 2025 annual meeting revealed ongoing challenges in expanding bird monitoring efforts across multiple Chinese cities. Participants from Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Zhengzhou convened to discuss shared experiences and difficulties.
In Chengdu, surveys from 2023 to 2024 recorded 170 bird species. However, the 2025 survey, covering fewer areas, documented 152 species. Shanghai's survey in the Dongtan wetland area saw 120 volunteers record 99 species, including notable waterbird populations.
Beijing's survey faced issues with remote sample areas, volunteer engagement, and disruptions from weather and infrastructure problems. Similarly, Guangzhou and Shenzhen experienced lower volunteer turnout than anticipated, with many participants needing further training for accurate bird identification.
Organizers stressed the need to address these volunteer-related challenges and develop sustainable strategies to ensure the long-term promotion and success of the CBBS project.
