China Asserts Climate Leadership as U.S. Skips COP30 Summit
15 Nov
Summary
- China dominates COP30 conference, showcasing its renewable energy and EV industries
- U.S. absent from the climate summit for the first time in 30 years
- China playing a more active role in climate diplomacy, filling the void left by the U.S.

As the world gathers for the COP30 UN Climate Change Conference in Belem, Brazil, a notable absence is felt - the United States. For the first time in three decades, the U.S. has declined to send an official delegation to represent its interests at the summit.
This void, however, has been filled by China, which is now asserting its leadership in the global fight against climate change. China's country pavilion dominates the entrance hall of the conference grounds, and executives from its biggest clean energy companies are presenting their visions for a green future to large audiences in English.
Behind the scenes, China's diplomats are also playing a more active role in the negotiations, helping to reach agreements on the COP30 agenda before the talks even began. This is a shift from previous years, when China's involvement was more limited.
