Lakes Unite: China & Africa Tackle Erosion
31 Mar
Summary
- Poyang Lake in China and Lake Victoria in Africa collaborate.
- Both lakes face similar ecological challenges like erosion.
- Joint efforts support sustainable development and preservation.

Poyang Lake in China and Lake Victoria in Africa, the largest freshwater lakes on their respective continents, have embarked on a significant cross-continental collaboration. These lakes are vital water sources, supporting millions of people and providing essential habitats for diverse wildlife.
Xu Weimin, Party secretary of the Jiangxi Research Academy of Ecological Civilization, noted during a 2024 visit to the Lake Victoria region that it faces challenges akin to those Poyang Lake has previously encountered, such as soil erosion and wetland degradation.
Through the support of initiatives like the Global South-South Development Center Project and the UN Perez-Guerrero Trust Fund, both lakes, which are members of the Living Lakes Network, have united. This alliance focuses on addressing their shared ecological issues, promoting sustainable development and enhancing ecological preservation efforts.
