Summary
- Children's initiative prevented 6,821 cigarette butts from ocean entry.
- Cigarette butt waste on sand decreased by over 53% in two years.
- 85.7% of child participants shared knowledge, extending project impact.
In Ayangue, Ecuador, a pioneering citizen science initiative has mobilized children aged 7 to 12 to address the pervasive issue of cigarette butt pollution.
This project, named Monitoring of Cigarette Butts Ayangue Limpio (MCBAL), saw children from the local Ecoclub Ayangue Limpio actively monitor a 1,500 square metre beach area monthly. Over a two-year period, their consistent efforts successfully prevented 6,821 cigarette butts from entering the ocean. Concurrently, direct monitoring revealed a significant 53.2% reduction in cigarette butts collected from the sand between 2023 and 2024.
The reduction in litter is attributed to a multifaceted approach. Strategic installation of reused PVC cigarette butt collectors yielded 1,198 butts. An 'Exchange Point' initiative encouraged waste collection by offering sports equipment in return, gathering 941 cigarette butts and nearly 98 kilograms of other debris across eight events.
Beyond waste collection, the initiative fostered significant knowledge dissemination. A remarkable 85.7% of participating children shared their learnings with families and communities, even encouraging workplace butt collection. The community council, Cabildo, actively supported the children's proposals, amplifying their environmental advocacy.
This program underscores the profound impact of integrating environmental education with hands-on problem-solving for youth. While not a panacea for global marine pollution, the Ayangue experience demonstrates the power of localized, youth-led actions in fostering environmental stewardship and driving meaningful change.
