Sanitary Bag Scheme Slashes Chichester Clogs
14 Feb
Summary
- Toilet blockages in Chichester dropped significantly.
- Over 300,000 special bags were distributed to students.
- 66% of pipe blockages are caused by period products and wipes.

Toilet blockages in Chichester have seen a dramatic reduction following a campaign focused on the proper disposal of sanitary products. Southern Water collaborated with the University of Chichester to distribute over 300,000 discreet and hygienic bags for these items. This initiative, launched last year, resulted in a 62% decrease in blockages, with only 11 incidents recorded between September and December, compared to 29 in the same period of the previous year.
This success underscores the impact of public education on waste management. Nationwide, an estimated 2.5 million tampons and 1.4 million sanitary pads enter UK sewers daily. Sanitary products and wet wipes are responsible for 66% of all pipe blockages. Many users admit to flushing these items due to a lack of proper disposal methods. The campaign's educational approach proved effective, sparking conversations and raising awareness about what should not be flushed.
