Spiked Railings Spark Bridge Battle
1 Jul
Summary
- National Trust installed spiked railings without permission.
- Over 4,500 signed petitions to keep the bridge open.
- Bridge deemed unsafe, replacement estimated over £1 million.

Walkers are voicing strong objections to the National Trust's plan for spiked railings at a Cheshire beauty spot. These railings were installed around a wooden footbridge at Quarry Bank in Styal last year, which the charity had controversially closed due to safety concerns. The application for these gates has revealed they were installed without prior permission, sparking a campaign to save the bridge.
The National Trust stated the bridge presents an 'unacceptable safety risk' and its replacement would cost over £1 million. However, walkers argue the bridge has withstood the test of time and its closure impedes popular routes along the River Bollin. An online petition to keep the bridge open garnered over 4,500 signatures, and a dedicated Facebook group has attracted more than 600 members.
Objectors also contend that the large-spiked metal barriers detract from the bridge's historic character. Residents have submitted complaints, emphasizing the bridge's long-standing importance to the Styal conservation area. Many National Trust members believe funds should prioritize repair or appropriate replacement to restore public access.
