19 Mar
Summary
- Zoo infrastructure is being upgraded for a summer visitor surge.
- New animal exhibits and enrichment activities are being introduced.
- The zoo expects significantly higher visitor numbers this summer.

The Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai is undergoing extensive upgrades to accommodate a predicted surge in visitors during the upcoming summer holiday season. Infrastructure improvements include resurfaced roads and new, shaded rest areas, alongside a dedicated room for nursing mothers. These facilities are now operational, with roadwork nearing completion.
Zoo management anticipates a substantial increase in visitor numbers, potentially tripling weekend crowds compared to weekdays. This projection is based on rising attendance figures observed in previous summer months. To enhance the visitor experience, the zoo is also focusing on animal well-being through new enrichment activities.
Enrichment programs have been implemented for various species, including baboons and primates, with specially designed feeding platforms and play structures. Newly arrived Himalayan black bears have also received a new play structure. The park is also expecting new avian arrivals and pure-bred Asiatic lions from Gujarat, promising additional attractions for visitors.
