A crucial half-day consultation was held for the Pallikaranai watershed region of the Kovalam basin, uniting researchers, civic groups, and residents. Organised by the Oorvani Foundation and the Chennai Wetlands Action Collective, the event took place at IIT-Madras Research Park on Saturday. During this session, participants officially formed the Pallikaranai Collective.
The primary objective of this newly formed collective is to develop a People's Charter for the Pallikaranai Watershed. This wetland is recognized as critical for Chennai's ecological health and its resilience against flooding. Experts highlighted that decades of stress on the ecosystem have accumulated, partly due to government agencies prioritizing urban development without adequate coordination.
Concerns voiced included ongoing Metro Rail construction impacting the marsh, sewage pollution, and significant biodiversity loss. Citizen groups from various localities discussed issues such as rapid urbanisation, shrinking wetland areas, increased flood risks, and inadequate waste management. Calls were made for greater developer responsibility and public release of flood mitigation reports.
