Chennai Street Drowns in Sewage
10 Feb
Summary
- Residents face daily sewage overflows on Pillaiyar Koil Street.
- Poor road and sewer gradient causes wastewater to spill.
- Temporary relief from sewage pumping, permanent solution sought.

Residents on Pillaiyar Koil Street in Akkarai, Chennai, have endured recurring sewage overflows for months, leading to significant health concerns. The street's location at the tail-end of the sewer network makes it prone to wastewater spilling onto the road, exacerbated by an incorrect gradient between the road and sewer lines. This situation forces residents, including children who frequently fall ill, to wade through sewage.
Temporary relief is provided by Chennai Metrowater personnel who pump out stagnant sewage upon receiving complaints. However, residents seek a permanent resolution to the persistent problem. They have also called for the desilting of the Akkarai pond to improve groundwater recharge. Ward councillor Menaga Shankar has escalated these concerns through official channels, with estimates being prepared for the pond restoration and walkway construction.
Officials from Chennai Metrowater acknowledge the issue of pipelines laid against the natural gradient. Measures are underway to re-lay the pipeline and ensure proper connection to the sewage pumping station, aiming to resolve the recurring overflows plaguing the Akkarai neighborhood.
