The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched a comprehensive waste segregation initiative in the southern part of the city. This ambitious drive, named "Segregate Waste-Save Tomorrow," is designed to promote effective solid waste management.
The first phase of this program targets an impressive 50,000 households across five zones in South Chennai. Each zone will initially focus on 10,000 households, with a gradual expansion planned. The campaign officially began on Saturday and is set to run for 40 days.
As part of the ongoing efforts, GCC employees are conducting extensive door-to-door awareness activities. They are distributing specialized bags for the separate collection of non-biodegradable waste and providing informational flyers to residents. Informational posters are also being displayed on house walls to reinforce the message.
In Valasaravakkam Zone, activities commenced in Krishnamachari Nagar and Ashtalakshmi Nagar. Alandur Zone saw awareness drives in Himachal Nagar Link Area. Adyar Zone's efforts included a program at the Integrated Child Care Centre in Thiruvanmiyur.
Further engagement is occurring in Perungudi Zone at the GCC Zone Office and in Sholinganallur Zone at the Labour Housing Park. These localized events underscore the widespread nature of the campaign. Initially, 1,000 households per zone received waste segregation bags and information kits, totaling 5,000 households.
Teams from GCC and Urbaser Sumeet will conduct regular follow-ups over the 40-day period. Their objective is to reinforce waste segregation practices and monitor public involvement. Following the campaign, an evaluation of household participation and waste collection efficiency will be conducted.
