Summary

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on May 11, 2026, the successful release of two cheetahs from Botswana into Kuno National Park. These felines, identified as CCV-2 and CCV-3, have completed their quarantine period and were set free near the Kuno River, marking another milestone for 'Project Cheetah'.
This initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approximately three and a half years ago, is dedicated to restoring endangered cheetah populations in Madhya Pradesh. The successful reintroduction of cheetahs from various international sources, including Namibia and South Africa, has elevated Madhya Pradesh's status as the 'Cheetah State'.
With the arrival of these two cheetahs, the total count in India has risen to 57. Wildlife experts anticipate that the cheetahs from Botswana will contribute significantly to genetic diversity, fostering a healthy and sustainable population. Preparations are also underway to relocate some cheetahs to other sanctuaries within Madhya Pradesh, such as Gandhi Sagar and Nauradehi.
