Cheetahs Roam Rajasthan: Kuno Park Cats Explore New Territory
6 Mar
Summary
- Two cheetahs from Kuno National Park are now in Rajasthan's Baran district.
- A proposed MoU for cheetah movement feasibility study between states is unsigned.
- Large Kuno-Gandhi Sagar landscape spans 17,000 sq km across two states.

Two cheetahs from Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh are now ranging in Rajasthan's Baran district. The male cheetah, KP-3, recently dispersed into the Ramgarh area, approximately 3 km from the Ramgarh Crater, joining KP-2 which had previously entered the same landscape. This is the fifth documented instance of a cheetah moving from Kuno to Baran.
Forest departments from both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are actively monitoring the cheetahs' movements via satellite tracking and ground teams. Local villagers have been advised to exercise caution in forest areas. A proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two states to study the free movement of cheetahs across the Kuno National Park and Kuno-Gandhi Sagar Cheetah Landscape awaits finalization.
This unsigned MoU has delayed the commencement of feasibility studies, potential involvement of the Wildlife Institute of India, and the groundwork for developing suitable cheetah habitats and a coordinated conservation strategy. The Kuno-Gandhi Sagar landscape is extensive, covering around 17,000 square kilometers, with a significant portion in Rajasthan.
