Charmadi Ghat Road Widening Threatens Tiger Corridor
23 Sep
Summary
- Nearly 39 acres of reserved forest slated for diversion.
- Over 7,540 trees could be felled for road widening.
- Project alignment impacts a critical tiger corridor.
Environmentalists have submitted representations to Karnataka authorities regarding the proposed widening of the Charmadi Ghat section of NH-73, citing significant ecological concerns. The project reportedly requires the diversion of approximately 39 acres of reserved forest and the felling of at least 7,540 trees.
Concerns have been amplified by a deputy conservator of forests' report, which noted the alignment passes through a tiger corridor and areas frequented by wild elephants. Despite these findings and the identification of the area as part of the Kudremukh-Pushpagiri tiger corridor, no wildlife clearance has been initiated.
The current proposal covers an 11.2 km stretch, but further widening is anticipated, raising fears of piecemeal approvals that could obscure the cumulative environmental impact. Experts advocate for alternative routes, minimum forest diversion, wildlife mitigation, and geological assessments before proceeding.
